In the Sundering books, Shadow Warriors, if I recall correctly, were actually just fed up that their land is caught up in the Malekith versus Phoenix King thing. They become a militant neutral party.Their condition for not fighting the High Elves is thay they have their own ShadowKingguy and that they don't fall under the orders of the Phoenix throne.Basically, they hate Malekith for what he did to their lands and actively oppose him. But they see the Phoenixbro as having been an antagonist that led to the destruction of their land as well.

They tolerate the other High Elves in order to avoid outright war with their neighbors. Shadow Warriors don't owe allegiance the Phoenix King, but they do help the armies of Ulthuan as scouts and elite infantry. Regular High Elves are actually afraid of them because they are so hateful and really not nice guys.Alith Anar is also basically a legend for High Elves because Elves only live to be about 800 years old, but he's thousands of years old. Malekith and Morathi only live because of magic, but this guy is pretty much living vengeance and hatred. Most elves don't believe he exists, or if he does that it's not just an inherited title.
